The Barton Reading and Spelling program was specifically crafted for students with dyslexia. Of course, many students with dyslexia struggle in ‘typical’ learning environments.
Thus, this program can help students overcome their struggles and achieve their academic goals. This program is based on the Orton-Gillingham method of teaching.
Although it keeps the same structure, it has some very important defining factors.
The Barton Reading and Spelling Program comes with a full range of support options both online and over the phone. Further, the lessons are structured in such a way that many different types of educators and students can benefit from the lessons.
In this blog, learn how the Barton Reading and Spelling program makes a big impact on students!
The Barton Reading and Spelling Program is Multi-Faceted
The Barton Reading and Spelling Program introduces aspects from many different approaches. The multisensory nature of the program allows a lot of different types of students to benefit from the program.
In the average classroom, one type of student could benefit – be it auditory, visual, kinesthetic, many teachers take a one-shot approach.
However, the Barton Reading and Spelling program is unique. Beyond simple spelling (repetition), the Barton program has a focus on the roots of words and truly allows students to understand the WHYs of words.
Students are encouraged to play games, to use letter blocks, listen and say words, and more, to achieve their academic goals. This gives room for personalization, while staying under an all-important structure.
10 Levels to Success
The Barton Reading and Spelling Program is divided into 10 levels. Within the program, each level represents a new level of understanding for the student.
A typical tutoring session lasts for about an hour and is always one-on-one between a student and a tutor. This is a key aspect of the Barton Reading and Spelling program, as it is necessary for each student to get ample time with their instructor.
Within each of the levels, they are broken down into the individual lessons and steps. Each one of the lessons has 18 steps, and the students change activities often.
As the activities change, the student stays engaged in the program and also changes their mindset between each activity. After the completion of a level, the student is assessed before moving on to the next stage.
After achieving level 10 (a great feat!), the student is done with their tutoring program and has gained new, life-impacting skills!
The Program Can Be Used Beyond the Classroom
The beauty of the Barton Reading and Spelling program is that it can be utilized in the home! Ultimately, it is best to be used in the presence of a tutor or an educational professional.
Fundamentally, a parent can walk a child through the program. However, it is best delivered under the supervision of a Barton Certified Professional.
Yet, after the Barton Program is completed by a student, there are a lot of resources available for students to continue their education and stay fresh.
