What Is The Treatment for Dyslexia?

by | Dec 28, 2022 | Tutoring

Dyslexia is a condition found in nearly one of every five people. With such a common condition, one would think that there are many different ways to treat it. However, that is not the case. There is one method that is agreed upon as the best way to treat dyslexia, as well as other reading and writing deficiencies.

First, in order to understand dyslexia treatment, we need to understand what exactly dyslexia is. Check out the rest of this quick read to find out what dyslexia is, and what it does, and the best way to treat it.

What Is Dyslexia?

Dyslexia is a learning disability found in nearly 20 percent of all people. This disorder is characterized by experiencing difficulty when reading both numbers and letters. Contrary to popular belief, dyslexia is not an indicator of intelligence. It is possible for any individual to have dyslexia, and does not mean their intelligence is lesser in any way.

Additionally, dyslexia is not an indicator of vision. While many people with dyslexia often describe letters and numbers blurring, moving, or distorting, the problem actually lies within the brain, not within the eyes. A person with perfect 20/20 vision can experience dyslexia, because the problem relates to brain processing.

Dyslexia can be a severe disability, especially in young children. When learning to read and write, dyslexia can make it incredibly difficult for them, causing them to fall behind academically, or perform poorly in school.

So how do we treat dyslexia? Keep reading to find out!

Dyslexia Treatment

With such a common disability, one would think that several different types of treatment are available. However, as I stated before, that is not the case. There is one dyslexia treatment that is often agreed upon as the gold standard. That specific dyslexia treatment is the Barton Reading and Spelling System.

The Barton System was developed in 1998 by Susan Barton and has been being used as the premiere dyslexia treatment for over 20 years. This treatment method is a multi-sensory approach, meaning that students use all of their senses when participating in it. With The Barton Method, a student is using more than just their mind to learn.

This specific dyslexia treatment is intended for all ages, and designed for one-on-one tutoring. Regardless of if you are an adult with untreated dyslexia, or your child is just starting to struggle, this dyslexia treatment method is right for you.

Here at Reading With Results, we believe that each student deserves their own individual attention and education plan. This is why The Barton Method works perfectly within our organization. In fact, our tutors are Barton Method certified. This
